I draw lines between shadow and light. Mostly my drawings are based on photographs that I have taken. Retracing the images makes me revisit places, study the traits and expressions of people, see things from a different perspective. My work is melancholic, but in a happy way: drawing a street view in New York makes me want to go back there and sit in Washington Square Park; drawing a portrait of my partner makes me fall in love with him all over again. Drawing is a synesthetic experience for me.
Even though I received a Master’s Degree in Visual Arts several years ago I feel like I am only now growing into becoming an artist. Between then and now I have traveled around the world, saved whales in the Southern Ocean, learned to scuba dive on the Great Barrier Reef, sailed on a yacht around New Zealand, got a driver’s license in Fiji, walked up Mount Fuji, skated with the Bay Rollers’ derby girls, had Yum Cha in Hong kong and vegan mac’n’cheese burritos in Portland… the list goes on… All these amazing places and experiences are now lining up to become part of my new work.
